Rogue

Rogue

Rogue is a very large wolf/ malamute cross that came to Mission:Wolf as a puppy in 1995.  He had been purchased to be a companion for a small boy.  When Rogue grew to be three times the size of the boy within a few months, his owners realized the mistake they had made.  There was no way around it – Rogue was going to be a handful and could not live with their boy.  The owners found out about Mission:Wolf and drove up to the refuge with Rogue.  When the founder went out to greet them, the owners said that if he didn’t take Rogue, they were going to set him free in the area.  Exasperatedly, Kent accepted Rogue and brought him down the hill to live with an older wolf-dog named Yaqui.

At less that a year old, Rogue began to challenge Yaqui for alpha status.  Eventually, their fights became so intense that they had to be separate them from each other. Rogue lived a solitary life for five years, further developing a rambunctious character and penchant for causing trouble.  Metal water tubs became his playthings, and although they are clipped to the fence, he still pulls hem off from time to time, crunches them with his massive jaws, and buries them throughout his enclosure.

In 2001, Mission:Wolf received a call from a family that had a young wolf-dog female who needed a home. Rogue and the new female, named Saidee, took to each other quickly.  Saidee’s presence helped Rogue to calm down greatly.  He was still known for “rogue-ilizing” (his form of howling) at anyone who came close, but his water tubs started to last a little longer.  Then, in 2002, Rogue lost his right eye to a severe case of glaucoma.  He has fully recovered and doesn’t seem to miss his one blue eye except when he tries to catch meat at feeding time.

As Saidee got older, it became apparent that she was a malamute dog without any wolf ancestry who that had been sold as a wolf-dog in order to make more money.  She soon found a good home with a friend of Mission:Wolf who knows how to care for challenging dogs.  Meanwhile, Rogue was introduced to a new, three-legged wolf-dog female named Aurora.  Aurora’s bounce personality won Rogue over almost instantly.  They seem very content together and everyone hope that Rogue’s aggressive temperament will continue to be mellowed by Aurora’s presence.
