Moondancer and his daughter, Lakota, were part wolf and part malamute. They were the result of 12 years worth of selective breeding to create the perfect wolf-dog cross – an animal that looks like a wolf and acts like a dog. They both came to Mission:Wolf from New Jersey when their owner lost the lease on her land and needed to find them a temporary home. However, their owner was never able to reclaim then, and they lived the rest of their lives at Mission: Wolf.

Changing circumstances (i.e.. losing the lease on land, losing a job or being transferred, starting a family, ect) are very common reasons that even relatively well-behaved wolf-dogs lose their homes. Before you decide to bring a wolf-dog into your home, be absolutely positive that you can commit to caring for your animal for it’s entire life (possibly 20+ years). It is difficult to see that far into the future, of course, but you can take a number of precautions: buy your land outright, be willing to take a lower-paying job to stay in your wolf-friendly home, and set up a bank account or fund reserved solely for the animal’s care.
